Books We Have Loved

For World Book Day, 6 March 2014, we thought we would post on books that we and our colleagues have felt important or inspiring.
Gill Wier chose The Happiness Trap by Russ Harris
Based on ACT - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy - it gives some very practical ideas and new insights on coping with negative thoughts and feelings. It suggests that rather than fighting against or avoiding them it is more productive in the long run to find ways to accept and make room for negative thoughts and painful emotions. A key part of this is becoming more connected with your body and what you can sense in the here and now.
Gill says: "I have been making use of the techniques myself and suggesting them to clients where appropriate. I would recommend the book to anyone struggling with issues such as depression, anxiety or low self esteem, especially anyone who has tried lots of techniques such as challenging and reframing negative thoughts but found that they didn't have a long term effect on improving well being. It easy to read, entertaining in parts and gives you a different perspective on things."
Judith Caul chose To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Judith says: "The book resonates with me personally, as one of its main themes is about being compassionate to our fellow human beings and appreciating that as individuals, we are all flawed in some way."
Bay Whitaker chose Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Bay says: "I read this when I was 19 and it seems to me a book about growing up. Finn's journey down the Mississippi with runaway slave Name is a rite of passage: the boy learns about the world and about moral uncertainty. In addition it's a cracking story, and like real life, the characters' journey involves comedy and kindness as well as some frightening and horrific parts. Before the journey Huckleberry has had a simpler more right/wrong view of life and the world. His odessy leaves him with many unanswered questions and uncertainties, and the need to accept that these answers are not going to be forthcoming: wisdom indeed."
Rebecca Llewellyn chose Becoming Orgasmic: A Sexual And Personal Growth Programme For Women by Julia R Heiman and Joseph Lopiccolo
Rebecca says: "This book I have found to be very inspirational within my therapy work with women struggling with body image, vaginisimus and desire disorders. It is accessible for clients to read also and so works well within the therapy setting. It really helps to empower women to regain control of their bodies and learn to engage with their sexual being."
